How to Avoid a Fee Dispute

Hosted by the Fee Disputes Committee

Fee disputes with clients are a litigation hotbed as well as a significant source of complaints to the Disciplinary Board.  Attorney fee disputes are often the result of a breakdown in the attorney-client relationship.  To avoid fee disputes with clients, or to successfully defend against an excessive fee claim, attorneys should adhere to standard best practices with a focus on ethical responsibilities.
This informative CLE will offer guidance on how to avoid a fee dispute and shield oneself from the negative consequences of a lawsuit and/or disciplinary action. It also will cover the steps you may take if a fee dispute does arise.  Panelists will address the following among other topics:
  • Best practices for client intake
  • Best practices during a client engagement
  • Reasons for terminating the attorney-client relationship
  • The fee dispute resolution process
Learning to avoid fee disputes prevents difficulties later and may preserve the client relationship.  Attend this practical program and hear best practice tips to avoid a fee dispute and what to do if a fee dispute occurs.
