Small Contracts for Short, Finite Periods of Time . . . What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

In this video-encore programa litigator and an M&A attorney will use real life examples of contracts to demonstrate how “simple,” poorly worded or poorly drafted contracts can lead to big problems.

When clients want to save money while preparing a “simple” agreement, they can just “recycle” an old agreement you’ve prepared for them, right? Wrong. Individuals that are drafting contracts need to fully understand all facets of the deal, conceptualize those areas where disputes could arise down the road, and preemptively address these potential situations through their drafting skills. In contracts, the details matter, and every word, sentence, and paragraph is critical to a contract's legality and interpretation. A well-drafted contract avoids misunderstanding, helps guide the parties in the course of their relationship, and can help avoid (or at least mitigate) litigation costs.

For some clients, the importance of these concepts sometimes fall by the wayside in “small” transactions, where the client views the reduction to writing of the agreed-upon understanding as a cursory step in formalizing the agreement. No matter the size of the transaction or business agreement, however, solid contract-drafting skills are essential.

Not just for newer attorneys, panelists will discuss specific problems with two separate contracts and provide clear and straightforward methods for making those agreements stronger, less ambiguous, and more accurate in terms of documenting the true agreement of the parties.

If you deal with contracts in your practice—whether often or infrequently—you do not want to miss this program!
